Genetics 101

Genetics 101:

- RED Flag’s; young at diagnosis, bilateral cancers, multiple cancers, history male breast cancers,

-TissuescellschromosomesDNAgenes

- Our DNA is prone to errors replicating over and over again some things may fall out of place but Genes like BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 come in to play to ensure that these errors don’t go un noticed. With a mutation or damaged copy of this gene BRCA 1 or 2 these replication errors are going to be unstoppable.

-5-10% of common cancers is hereditary

- Three of the higher risk groups French Canadian’s, polish, and Ashkenazi Jewish.

- Example of rate in non-Ashkenazi Jewish groups 1/400 to 1/500 where those of Ashkenazi Jewish decent are 1/40

- To find a genetic councilor in your area the Canadian association of genetic councilors https://cagc-accg.ca/
