Excersice and diet info-non surgical

- Risk for BRCA 1/2 families 80% breast cancer risk, 20-40% ovarian risk

- When there is a mutation like BRCA 1 or 2 that 2nd copy of the chromosome is only producing ½ the amount of protein

-research results that may interest you:

• No relationship between alcohol consumption and risk of breast cancer

• Loss of ≥10lbs (18-30 yrs) decrease risk of 34% (for all women) 53% decrease risk for diagnosis 30-40, no association with diagnosis > 40yrs old

• Drinking coffee and decreasing risk of cancer in BRCA 1/2

o Found that 49% decrease risk of 6 cups coffee/day

-DIM ( Diindolylmethane) is a stable compound found in cruciferous vegetables which promotes a beneficial estrogen metabolism in both women and men.

- some research going on with seeing if the DIM can promote the increased expression or action of BRCA 1 and 2 and there is results showing that it may be a future treatment….very exciting. It can naturally be found in broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, cabbage, etc.

- Studies going on about the diet and lifestyle of Polish vs. Canadian why the risks are less for BRCA 1 to get cancers. So far its showing that the risk in Canada is 72% and Poland is 49%

- Folic acid and risk of breast cancer in BRCA 1 and 2, it is naturally occurring recommendation of 400ug/day

• Example of daily items:

  • one cup of; cheerios, milk (skim), orange juice, romaine lettuce, spaghetti. One mango, one tomatoe, and 6 spears of asperigas= 462ug of folic acid

- too much of this vitamin is showing signs of possibly increasing the risk of breast cancer, further research is required to show the results of this. But pay attention to what you’re eating and your multivitamin.

- future research project physical activity in mutation carriers decreasing their risk, showing thus far that the best results are in the early teen years starting with regular physical activity

-what you can do:

1. maintain a healthy weight

2. physically active 60 min/day at least

3. watch your folate intake

4. if you drink coffee keep going

5. participate in research studies

6. stay tuned for further results of some of the mentioned studies
