We were only half of the excitement in Montreal; upstairs professionals from 25 different countries were discussing and presenting the latest in BRCA research.
Down where we were 116 residents of mostly MontrĂ©al area gathered covering a range of topics from: genetics 101, focus on ovarian and fallopian tube cancers (risk and prevention strategies), body image and sexuality after risk reducing surgery or cancer, understanding menopause across the life cycle (truth about HRT), non surgical approaches to modifying cancer risk (focus on diet and exercise), MRI vs. mastectomy how do I decide, breast reconstruction after mastectomy what are my options, a female and male testimonial about living with BRCA, BRCA in men the forgotten link, and they ended with a “show and tell” and ask the experts round table discussion. They also had a presentation of a short film documentary made in Montreal about BRCA, it was called “knowing your roots”
The areas that I believe to be most relevant were the genetics 101, diet and exercise, MRI vs. mastectomy, body image/sexuality, and the options for reconstruction, and of course want to throw out a couple of points that I had brought up to me in the break discussions that I had with fellow participants. Let me summarize the topics for you.
